A NEW BEGINNING

By Rachel  |   From : Cuba  |   School : Lake Worth High School

My name is Rachel Ortiz; I’m from Cuba. I’m a sophomore at Lake Worth High School.   My father came to the United States when I was very young.  Because of the distance, I was six years without being able to see him.  For that same reason, several birthdays passed by without his presence; nevertheless, he never missed a call.  When I was sick, worried, whenever he could; he would send me gifts, but I only wanted to be next to him.

When I turned 14, they told me that I was finally going to be able to come to the United States. That day I was very happy, it was what I had always wanted. It had finally arrived; the opportunity I had been waiting for.

It was two days before the date of the flight, and many doubts came to my mind.  On one hand, I was going to meet with my father; but on the other, I was leaving behind my whole life: my friends, part of my family, my house, MY COUNTRY. I could only think that nothing would ever be the same.  I would have to learn a completely different language, to make new friends, to learn new customs, in other words, to start from the beginning.

The first three months in U.S were the best.  I started in a new school and met people with whom I felt good and made me feel at home. Sometimes I would like to go back to Cuba, but I know that here I am going to have a better future. I have been in the United States for two years now, and my new beginning goes by achieving my dreams.
