Background

My story starts here. My name is Flor. I am from Guatemala where I was born in November, 2002. I grew up with my grandparents and my brother.

We lived in a house right next to the mango tree. It was a moderately sized house. I went to school while my brother went to college. Whenever I had the chance I would talk to my cousins. We would have a gathering and eat mangos and play fun games and talk.

My family, my uncles, my aunts, and my cousins would take a bus to the beach. We took food and enjoyed a nice picnic on the sandy beach. My aunt cooked roasted meat, fried chicken, toast, and tamales alone. On Christmas, the whole family would get together at my grandma’s house, even my aunt and my cousin from the United States.

This would carry all the way to New Year’s Eve. My grandfather took a parenting role and always scolded me for misbehaving. I was six years old when he first visited the United States. He was very sad because he missed my Mom and my Dad. My mom had come to the United States looking for work and a new life to give us a better future.

The Journey

I took a trip on the American Airlines plane from Guatemala directly to Los Angeles. I had to say goodbye to my grandparents, which was sad. I was crying the whole time because I would miss them. It felt that once I left I would never be able to see them again. The one I am going to miss the most is my grandfather. My aunt was very sad to be separated from them. I thought I would never see them but now I can travel and go see them and not forget my other family.
