Built from sacrifice

By Moises  |   From : Guatemala  |   School : South Broward High School

My parents came here from Guatemala legally but they came with a mission to make their lives better and to make a better future for us. The first school I attended was an almost all black school and it was not bad. Some kids questioned us about our skin color and language when I spoke to my mom in Spanish, but I had friends that did not care about that. My neighborhood was pretty diverse, there were black people from different countries, a few asian people and white people and everyone got along. The school I went to was also diverse so no one had a problem with each other based on country or language. The second time I went to Guatemala was before high school and I enjoyed my time. I was older and was able to learn more about my mom’s side of the family and I went alone because my cousin had to do things with his family so he didn’t go to Guatemala with me .before you came back I had learned that my family had to move out from our old home. High school was not what I heard from teachers, in fact it was better than what I expected. At home there were some legal issues for my family but we were able to get through them. Going into Junior year it was when I started to think about what I wanted to do after high school and some of the people I know were going through similar problems and problems of their own. I also tried to get my driving permit but the day I went the law changed and any guardian needed to show legal documents that they were my “parent.” It was difficult to accept that but I have to keep moving on.

Currently senior year there is good and bad. The good thing is, only a few months until I graduate and create the second base for my future. My grades are looking good and nothing is going to change that. Some of the bad that happened before senior year and during a part of senior year was that my dad was stopped by police for a traffic stop and since it would be his 3rd time in 12 years he would have to spend a few days in jail, which is whatever we can be patient but, ICE is rampant and something worse could happen. In the end it turned out good and only had to pay a fine. Another bad but I have hope that in the end it will turn out good is some colleges that I apply to require my parents legal residency and my parents do not have that. Some schools do not ask that so hopefully those accept me. That is where my current chapter of my story is at.
