Caribbean
By Keysha | From : Boston | School : International Newcomers AcademyCaribbean
I’m from the freshly brewed coffee in the morning.
I’m from the juicy mango next to the beach.
I’m from playing with dolls with my childhood friends during summer vacation.
I’m from naps during braiding sessions.
I’m from the barrettes braiding.
I’m from jumping rope with my best friend and sister after school.
I’m from the burning sun.
I’m from the Pearl of the Antilles.
I’m from the big beaches.
I’m a Zoe, a small island.
I am from a Hundred Memories.
I am from Multiple stories.
I’m from hot bread with peanut butter.
I’m from the hot street food “pate kode” in the morning.
I’m from the shiny sun.
Creole is in my DNA.
Creole is in me.
I’m not Caribbean.
The Caribbean is in me.
The Caribbean is my home.
ME, ME , ME
A year ago, I left the land,
Where dreams were dashed by shifting sand.
Haiti’s streets, both rough and wide,
Held the pain I couldn’t hide.
The weight was heavy, hearts were torn,
In every dusk, another morning.
But with the dawn of change so near,
I found the strength to leave the fear.
Now in Boston, a world away,
Where hope blooms bright in skies of gray,
My life transformed, a different view,
A chance to breathe, to start anew.
The city hums, the lights aglow,
Where the warmth of friendship helps me grow.
From shadows past, to laughter loud,
I stand now taller, unbowed.
So here’s my present, bold and true,
A life rebuilt, a heart anew.
In Boston’s arms, I’ve found my way,
A brighter future, here to stay.
Dear Future Me,
I hope this letter finds you exactly where you dreamed of being. I’m writing this today as a reminder of all the dreams and hopes I have for you, and as a promise to myself that no matter where life takes us, we will always stay focused on what truly matters.
Right now, I’m working hard to lay the foundation for a future that is full of purpose and happiness. I know that one day, you’ll hold that bachelor’s degree in law that you’ve been striving for. I’m excited for the day when you walk across that stage, knowing all the hours of study and sacrifice were worth it. You’ve always had a passion for justice, and I know you’ll use your degree to make a real impact in this world.
But more than anything, I want you to remember what truly matters—love and happiness. I hope by the time you read this, you’ve found a husband who treats you with kindness, respect, and love. A partner who understands and supports your dreams, and who you can share every joy and challenge with. Together, I know you’ll create a beautiful, loving family.
I dream of the day you’ll hold your kids close, smart, curious, and full of life. You’ll guide them, and give them all the love they need to grow up strong and kind. Watching them become their own unique selves will be the greatest joy of all.
I also know you’ve worked hard for the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of. The big house with the pool, where laughter and happiness fill every room. And the car, that beautiful one you always imagined cruising through life in. I can see it now: a life full of comfort, luxury, and ease, but most importantly, surrounded by love and the things that truly matter.
And of course, I know you’ve traveled the world by now, seeing new places, meeting new people, and gaining experiences that have enriched your life in ways words can’t describe. Each adventure you have had has shaped you into the strong, wise person you are, and I hope you never stop exploring.
No matter where you are when you read this, I want you to know that I believe in you. I believe in your strength, your determination, and your heart. You’ve already come so far, and I know the future holds so many wonderful things for you. Keep chasing your dreams, keep working hard, and keep loving with all your heart.
With love and faith in the future,
Your Present Self Keysha.
