“Congratulations!”
By Kim | From : Vietnam | School : Margarita Muniz AcademyIn 2024, I told my mom and dad I got a full tuition scholarship and we don’t need to worry about the cost of college anymore. I was expecting the celebration, the prize that they were going to give to me as the way I’m happy for myself because this is a competitive scholarship. Unfortunately, their reaction disappointed me when the first thing mom said was “If you can get it, I will walk by my head” – they thought it was a joke. The moment I received the words from my mom I thought “ Do I just get this scholarship because I’m lucky ?” and I wonder if I’m not trying hard enough for my family to believe in me. So the celebration I was expecting would never appear until they saw the certificate from Boston Scholarship.
Though I was frustrated for a moment, the one closest to me and they didn’t believe that I could achieve success, but besides that, my friends and teachers celebrated that moment with me. The “ congratulations!” filled the hallway, and classroom when my classmates knew about me getting the scholarship. I felt the positive energy from them, from those who understand and trust in my real capacity and it helps me to stand myself up again. I realized it was funny when my parents didn’t believe I could grow and develop out of the standard they gave for me, but I did. I could just stay silent and won’t prove anything because I doubted myself, but I chose to not give up and kept going for my future. I chose to prove to them by applying for other scholarships and getting accepted for more scholarships.. Imagine if you don’t have anyone’s support and the cheer-up runs through your future pathway, just remember you are the one who will stay with yourself until the last breath, so you can believe in yourself if someone doesn’t.
I want to share my story with the students who lack support in their education pathways. They may know will have someone have the same situation as them, and there are a lot of options for their future. Because you don’t have anyone believe in you, you still have to believe in yourself and don’t give up on yourself. I could just stay silent and not prove anything to my parents because I wondered about myself, but I chose to not give up and kept going and applied other scholarships for my future.
Keep going in your dream and don’t ever get a negative impact from others. They don’t contribute any flowers in your life so why do you let them take away your happiness? Believe in yourself. Being supportive, your small action will have a big positive impact on others. Your action may be a motivation for them to make the decision.
