From N. Africa to N. America

By Rayan  |   From : Tunisia  |   School : Plantation High School

My name is Rayan, and I am from Tunisia in North Africa. In Tunisia, I spoke Arabic and French every day. Now I am learning English, which has not been easy for me. I came to America in 2024 with my mother and my twin sister. My father is still in Tunisia. I miss him very much, but we talk on the phone often, and we have a strong relationship. I hope to visit him again soon.

My first year in America was challenging. I did not understand much English, and sometimes I felt lost at school. I depended a lot on my teachers and my sister to help me understand my classes and adjust to my new environment. My sister is talented with languages. She speaks English fluently and always helps me with my homework. I am grateful for her support, and I appreciate her every day.

My favorite class is ESOL because it helps me learn how to speak and write in English. I feel proud when I can write a paragraph on my own. I also enjoy my construction class because the teacher is patient and gives us fun, hands-on projects. Learning by using my hands helps me understand better. Even though school is sometimes still difficult, I do not give up. I keep trying because I want to be successful for myself, my mother, and my sister. I want to make them proud.

In Tunisia, I loved riding my motorcycle, and I even won a motorbike competition there. I hope to compete in motorcycle races here in America one day as well. At school, I feel accepted, and I have support from others. After I finish school, my dream is to start my own car dealership, earn good money, and build a strong and successful future for myself and my family.
