I was born in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala on July 7, 1998. My parents spoke Quiche. They had three children. I am the youngest. My second sister died when she was a baby. My father died when I was two. This was a hard time for my family. My mother got married three years later and had five more children.

When I was 7 years old, I felt disappointed because I started school. But I started to like it later when I was 10 years old. I felt disappointed again because I had to go work in the fields with my step-father. The good thing was I could go to school part time until I was 16.

When I was 15 years old, I felt anxious because I wanted to help my family. But my mother said, “No! Wait a little longer.”

When I was 17 years old, I felt hopeful because I left home and came to America. The journey was very long and very dangerous. The border guards captured us. Later, I came to New York to live with my aunt. I feel happy here, but I miss my family.
