Where I am From
By Student | From : Dominican Republic | School : Boston International Newcomers AcademyWhere I Am From
I am from sancocho and rice
Which tastes like mama chicha’s house
I am from Frito with salami
I am from beach, river and sun
I am from the basilica and circuitos
I am from a place where people dance bachata, palo and merengue.
The present safe place
The dirty water in the sera
Where children play
Motores making loud sound in the street
Ninos in the street playing around
Feeling her free
People sitting outside their houses
Talking about other people’s business
The loud music coming out of the colmado
Like there’s a party
Children on bicycles falling and laughing
It Is my childhood
At everytime, night and morning
The haitian girl selling dulce de mani
Yelling dulce de mani dulce de mani
The motoconcho in the esquina
Dress like a aguacate
That’s my safe place, el barrio.
Dear future jey
In 10 years from now I hope you are a friendly person like now and have new people around you.
I want you to have a big house close to your family in DR. I hope we already travel with our cousins and brothers. I want you to be responsible and have your own family and make your mom proud. I hope you make a good decision about what you want to study after high school. I believe you have a good job that you like to do and sufficient money to take care of your family and yourself. Also I hope you find a good man to create a family and a good place to live in peace.
