Family Matters
By Sebastian | From : Venezuela | School : Bonita Springs High SchoolI was born on April 27, 2007, in Caracas, Venezuela. When I was born, my parents were in a tough situation in terms of their relationship; however, my presence helped fix their relationship, and they have stuck together till this day. Thanks to them, I was able to live a happy childhood alongside my older brother. I’m very close with both sides of my family, and thanks to them, I’ve become the person that I am today.
Some of my earliest memories from my childhood are times of me and my brother playing with our cousins from my dad’s side of the family. They’ve been my best friends for my entire life, and they still continue to be. This is something that I’m very grateful for in my life since, as a kid, I struggled with socializing with others and making new friends.
My parents were very worried about me because it took me until the age of 4 to start talking. They decided to send me to a pediatrician to try and help enforce my social skills. Slowly, while going through school in Venezuela, I started making friends and became a known kid in my grade. However, when I moved to the United States, it became a whole different and new challenge for me.
We needed to leave Venezuela because it was becoming more dangerous, and our family needed to move to remain safer. The United States was a new culture that I was not accustomed to and very different from what I was used to. When I started going to school, I was very shy and barely understood what many of my classmates were saying, but thanks to some kids who speak Spanish, they helped me understand more about school.
Though with us leaving, it meant that we left a big part of our family behind in Venezuela. Thankfully, many of our family members decided to move away from Venezuela, but many are still far away from where we live. The majority of my mom’s side lives in Ohio, while my dad’s side lives in Spain. We all miss them a lot, but we at least get the chance to visit my mom’s side for special events or holidays. We haven’t visited our dad’s side because of immigration issues, and the last time we saw them was before we left for the United States.
My time in the United States has been difficult and different; however, some of the best moments in my life have happened here, and the future still holds so much more for me. For example, around 2 years ago, we got to see my cousins from my dad’s side for the summer. That was the best summer experience that I’ve had in my life, and it was an unforgettable experience.
I have one more year left of high school, and I have mixed feelings about it since part of me is excited but at the same time scared for the future. College will be a new experience, and becoming an adult is something that I feel came too soon for me. But I can only keep going forward until the very end and fight for my dreams.
In my future, I hope to achieve something in the medical field. This will require a lot of studying in order to pass the classes and meet all the requirements necessary for medical school. Though the career is going to be difficult, the important part is to not give up on any of your dreams. Also, family are the most important people anyone can use in order to get through tough times and the people you can rely on the most. They will be your best friends for the rest of your life and it’s nice to have them in your life.
