Sorry

thankful for all of the opportunities

By Valerie Hernandez  |   From : Colombian American  |   School : Everglades High School

My name is Valerie Hernandez and I am a fourteen-year-old freshman at Everglades High School. I was born in Kendall, Florida but I now live in Miramar, Florida. My parents are from Barranquilla, Colombia and I moved there when I was almost a month old. I moved back to Florida when I was three and a half years old. My parents decided to move back to Florida for economic purposes. I have not gone back, so I’m planning to visit Barranquilla next year for their annual carnival. Since Spanish is my first language, it was hard for me to learn English, I’m glad I learned it at a younger age. Speaking of languages, I plan to travel to Norway in the near future I am learning Norwegian because I am in love with their beautiful culture and landscape. Referring back to Colombia, one of the most special moments in my life was when my cousin moved Colombia to Florida. He and his family would visit sometimes but only for a short amount of time. I would always miss him and I was extremely content when he moved here since we can get together whenever we want to.

I have a huge appreciation for music and I listen to it all the time. I enjoy playing with my dog, spending time with my family, and playing video games. I am really interested in biology and my sports medicine class. I would love to have a job in the medical field.

Right now, I see the world as separated and damaged. Not only between countries but within the nation itself. Also, people have been driven towards extremism and resort to violence. As opposed to there being majority and minority, it would be best for the world if everyone put aside their differences and be united.

Unfortunately, I recall one of the worst moments of my life when my cross sibling died of cancer. Her name was Maria Paula and she was like a sibling to me. I used to hang out with her and my half-sister all the time. After her death, my sister and I didn’t talk to each other as much. I think about her sometimes and wonder if my life would be any different if she was still alive.

I am very thankful for all of the opportunities that I have in my life due to my parent’s hard work and I will always continue to appreciate everything I have in my life.
