First Try, Second Try
By Carlos Guaman | From : Ecuador | School : Bloomfield High SchoolSaturday September 14. I left Ecuador and my family. My family in Ecuador is my sister and my grandparents, and I came to see my other family which are my father and my brothers. It was my destiny.
It was October 30th when I got here. I saw pumpkins and decorations but I didn’t know anything about Halloween. It was my first time going out with my family. I didn’t know them. They had left me and my sister with my grandparents in Ecuador when we were babies. So it was weird, and I was really quiet. When we went to eat at the restaurant, my mom wanted to talk to me and I felt weird because she was asking me questions about my life in Ecuador. I cried every night missing my grandparents, my sister and my nephew from Ecuador. It felt sad to have other family in Ecuador that I had to leave just to come here and see my other family that I didn’t know. For me, it was an odd time. Kids in costume, orange lights strung on porches, the shout of “trick or treat” all around me. I didn’t know what to do or what to eat. My brothers explained it to me, but I still didn’t get it.
Everyday I wanted go into my room and cry. I missed my sister a lot – like when we went to parties and when we did something stupid and got in trouble or when I had to work and she woke me up at 4:00 am to cook lunch for me. When I called her, she cried just like me. I spent a week without eating or leaving my room. I really wanted to go back. Little by little I got used to life here and it was changing.
Now with time, I got used to my parents and my brothers but it cost me a lot. I had many fights with them. Now when I go out with my family, everything is different. My dad took us to a buffet in Clifton for Mother’s Day, He told me to eat sushi. The first time I didn’t like it, but the second time I liked that avocado roll. Now whenever I go to eat at a buffet or restaurant I always ask for sushi. A lot of my friends don’t like it, but they never tried it. They should try it.Sometimes you don’t like things on the first try , but then you do.
