Sorry

God will always guide my steps

By Olmor  |   From : Guatemala  |   School : Dunbar High School

My name is Olmor. I was born in 2005 in a small town right next to the border of Guatemala and Mexico. My town was small, surrounded by mountains and trees. where peace was something that surrounded us.

When I was three years old, my father made the difficult decision to leave his family. Since he had to support his 6 children and his wife since in the place we lived there was no job opportunity as there was in the United States. Without knowing it we were happy, we were already surrounded by friends and family who always made us feel happy. My youth was great because my parents knew how to hide the bad things that were starting to happen in my small town. Not everything goes rosy, the job shortage was so strong that many people began to make bad decisions that would affect their own families and that would also have repercussions in the town where we lived to earn easy money. Many people became involved in crime. Organized crime.

My father, a hardworking man, found out what was happening and for fear that his family would be harmed, by what was happening, he decided that we would leave everything and begin a trip to the United States so that we could discover the American dream. and that we would not get involved with weapon and dirty work that only destroy many home countries.

When I arrived in the United States I was surprised because I thought  I got used to seeing the US in the movies. But something was true: The food and the people were different.

Making friends in school was hard, but time put everything in order, I made good friends who I can trust and who can trust me.

When I got to high school everything changed for good. My brother and his friends, including me, got into  the running team. The coach saw potential in us, so we worked hard and made history. We were able to win the Sebrout meets against the number one high school here in Fort Myers. Running helps me shape My identity. I even worked so hard that I was able to break the school record. Opening several doors gives me a chance to go to college. Am still young and am still writing my story hoping everything is going to be okay. God in heaven will always guide my future steps.
