Going to Get Ice Cream
By Lizmary | From : Cuba | School : Mariner High SchoolHi, I’m Lizmary. I’m 18 years old and I was born in Matanzas, Cuba, in January 2007. My childhood was filled with love, laughter, and adventure, despite the challenges of living in a communist country. My family’s decision to leave Cuba in 2015 was bittersweet. My parents and family told me I had to say goodbye to my family because we were going to get ice cream. This was confusing as everyone seemed distraught . The hardest part was leaving my sister as she couldn’t join us due to her physical condition and mother’s political beliefs. This made things much harder as I have always been very close to her despite the distance as she is my inspiration to be better.
Our journey to the United States was a month-long challenge, filled with excitement and uncertainty. We traveled through Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico, experiencing new cultures at every turn. I remember riding motorcycles, speedboats, and helicopters, feeling like I was on a never ending field trip. For my parents this was the scariest experience of their lives, having to immigrate with a 7 year old and a 1 year old was not the easiest. Having the uncertainty of where we were going, where we were staying, or even what we were going to eat was difficult for them.
The reality of starting new in the U.S. was overwhelming. We started in Miami, Florida and were there for 2 years. I struggled to adjust to a new school, language, and culture. The hardest part was making friends and understanding others. I went to an only English school and none of the kids or teacher talked to me in my language. My parents started to prosper and be able to give us a decent life. Even with this I still missed my family, friends, and the comfort of my old life.
As we continued to move, I found myself adapting to new environments and making new friends. We moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida, where I went to elementary school and without knowing perfect English I learned to not be embarrassed and be myself Later on, we moved to Texas, where I did my 6th and 7th grade year. I created unforgettable memories with lifelong friends I still have now. When covid started we had to move again because of my dads work.
With each move, I faced new challenges. I had to navigate unfamiliar schools, make new friends, and adjust to different cultures. It wasn’t always easy, but because of my family’s love and determination I learned to be strong, adaptable, and open minded. Eventually, we settled in Cape Coral, Florida, Finishing my 8th grade year and starting at Mariner High School has gone by very fast and it has taught me to enjoy every moment, to appreciate everything life brings you, and not let obstacles get in the way of your happiness and dreams.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that home is not just a physical place, but a sense of belonging and love. I’ve come to realize that the people who matter most are those who stand by you, no matter where life takes you. As I look back, I’m grateful not only for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today but for my parents, who took me to get ice cream in the best place ever. I’ve learned to cherish every moment, to appreciate the beauty of the unknown, and to never take anything for granted.
