HEALING MY SCARS
By Daniel | From : Cuba | School : Mariner High SchoolMy name is Daniel and this is a story based on my experiences, my mistakes, and the great moments I have had so far in my life. I was born on January 6th in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, a humble and honest place full of good people. As a young child, I had a serious problem with my heart and lungs which led me to have multiple surgeries. After a year of going through a bad patch, I began to breathe without complications. My family was very important to me and helped me through this difficult stage of my life.
I remember my first birthday. It was celebrated in style, since we also celebrated the end of those difficult times in which I was admitted from one hospital to another. As time went by, I began to grow up to have a life full of wonderful things. One of those things was friendship. The relationship I had with my friends was the best because we always did things together like playing hide and seek or playing tag. It was one of the best moments of my life. I formed these relationships when I arrived at school, I met that person who in fact was in several classes and helped me and so we became friends.
I remember my first day in high school. In Cuba, high school was very different from the school in the United States where I came to because there were different languages, different ways of life, etc.I didn’t know almost anyone since the people who had fallen with me in my classroom were from another school and from other classrooms in my same school in elementary school. This was good for me since as I grew up I began to gain more experience, my grades in school were impeccable. At the beginning of the course, it was a bit impossible for me to get good grades because I didn’t know what the evaluation process was like. And I had to learn to do many things that I had never done before. But as time went by, I adapted and was able to start getting good grades and have better expectations of how these systems worked.Beginning of the course, it was a bit impossible for me to get good grades because I didn’t know what the evaluation process was like. And I had to learn to do many things that I had never done before. But as time went by, I adapted and was able to start getting good grades and have better expectations of how these systems worked., something that made me feel proud since my parents. When I finished high school I went to a place called PRE, it was at a high level and it was more difficult, but I made more friends than I could imagine. That year of Preschool I met a person who is very important in my life. When I entered the Pre a few months later I met a girl, I knew her by sight, but she always caught my attention and one night I went out with my cousins and I saw her at an event, said event was a concert and we met there from then on we started talking. I asked for her number, she asked for mine and we started to write to each other. and a few weeks later we ended up as a couple. Today she is with me and I am one of the happiest people that she is in my life since she is a very important person to me. That person was one of those who helped me because a year ago my father made the decision to come to the United States and months later my mother and my sister made the decision to come to be able to help my father, so that person helped me to face things in a good way. At first it was a little difficult to make that decision, since I didn’t know what I wanted. Since I had everything in Cuba, besides my family, my friends and my girlfriend, it was something I had to take since this was my future.
After 8 months, my parents made the decision to put me on parole, which was a good decision because I really wanted to come here with them, but at the same time I was terrified because I didn’t want to suffer from leaving what I had in Cuba, since I already had my friends, my girlfriend, half of my family, and I was also terrified of starting a new life here because I didn’t know what this process was going to be like. The first day I entered school I was very scared, but suddenly something changed. I met a person who is now one of my best friends. I consider him my brother. In the end, I think it was one of the best decisions I made. It was a long journey, but it was worth it to gain new friends and new experiences.
If today you asked me what I would have done, I would say that I would start everything from scratch with no regrets, period. But at least I would be proud to know that I still have people who will always love me by their side. I will never lose hope of seeing my loved ones again, since they are proud of me wherever I am.
What I would like you to learn from my story is that to have a better future we must take risks when it comes to making decisions, because if you don’t learn to make decisions in the future you don’t know if you will have one. In the future, when I finish school, I would like to be a doctor or I would like to dedicate myself to tattooing since I like to draw and it is a passion that I have shared since I was little.
