I am who I am and I will be who I want to be.
By Sonia | From : Saint-Denis France | School : Suger High SchoolHello my name is Sonia. The name in my high school is Suger.
I don’t speak very good speak English. But Jean-Michel Dissard came to my school to make us discover his film « I learn in America » and I want to learn too. The teachers organized a debate about immigration and the American dream. I asked myself questions after watching the film. It troubled me. What is the parents’ responsibility for the difficulties in these teenagers’ life ? What is my own identity ? Am I also a young immigrant facing difficulties like they are because my parents were immigrants ?
My country of origin is Cameroun and I am black. It is difficult because in the past I had friends when I was a kid. My best friend and I were very joyful but adults were not because we had different skin colours. People looked at us together as if it was wrong because we looked different. This is discrimination. For us we were the same.
I love America because it is the country of the American dream where everyone can be different and they can live together. I love America because I love singing and it is the country of dreams where everything is possible for me.
So after watching « I learn America », it made me think of my life.
My life story is not an exceptional story. There are a lot of people like me here, but “I am who I am and I will be who I want to be » !
