My name is Zayra Rios. This is my story about coming to the United States. I am 17 years old. I am from Mexico. I came to Phoenix because I wanted to learn English and have better opportunities.

My aunt told my mom and I about studying here for some years and learning English to get more opportunities and a good job when I go back to Mexico. So my mom and I accepted the offer. The trip was easy and short because I was in Agua Prieta, Sonora like 4 hours from Phoenix so I came here in car with my aunt and my four cousins on summer of 2015.

I was nervous because I didn’t know how life was here. I knew what I wanted and why I was here, so that’s why I never want to go back until I achieve my goals.

My first day in Central I was nervous about how the school was and I thought that nobody talked Spanish and I was more nervous. I knew that this change in my life would be so difficult because I left my mom, my brother, my boyfriend and my friends. That for me was so hard because I didn’t want to leave but I wanted to come here and have new experiences and the most important thing, learning English.
