I like my new life in the U.S
By Sebastian | From : Venezuela | School : East Lee County High SchoolI was once just a young kid in Venezuela, not the best, I was not born into the best of families
nor in a wealthy environment, Venezuela had a crisis for a long time, and this was always
present in my life showing in economic and social hardships, simple things like health,
electricity, food, and home were the thing that would be considered as a great privilege, but one
day, when I was 14, my parents decided to travel to the U.S. My dad was the first one to go to
the U.S leaving me, my mother, and my newborn brother behind, he gathers money to after 7
months, he sent us in travel to the U.S. We went through Colombia and Mexico, the travel was
around 4 months because we stayed in Mexico for around 2 months, it was hard, be in a whole
new country that we did not know anything about, I meet some familiars there that help us a lot,
and finally we start or journey once more in the U.S, taking a flight from Cancun to Mexicales,
we were illegally arrested for an entire day, after that with the help of a person, we travel all
across close to the Texas border, it was a 4 hours trip. We crossed the border with a group of
immigrants, and after that the border patrols took us in, we were released a day later and took a
flight to Florida, where we reunited with my father, we lived in a small house outside of Lehigh
Acres, we had very few money, even the smallest dollar could make the difference about if we
could pay the rent or not, School was scary at the beginning, I did not know anything about
English, new teachers, new country, new school mates, everything was great pressure on me,
without the help of my parents and teacher I would never understand how to get used to this
new life, I learn important things thanks to them. everything started to connect like a puzzle and
soon, I was already used to this new life, I could say, I liked my new life in the U.S more than my
old life in Venezuela because sometimes in Venezuela because of my likes, I feel as I did not
belong to my friend groups or community, but in the U.S everything was more natural, I did find
people with my same interest and goals. In the end without the help of my teachers, friends, and
parents, I would never make this far. I want to make a future where my parents and brother
don’t need to worry about money, health, or safety again.
