My Journey to the United States
By Benjamin | From : Mexico | School : Glades Central High School (FL)My name is Benjamin. I’m 16 years old. I was born in Queretaro, Mexico; my town was called San Antonio. One of the traditions and big celebrations in my town was the holidays in December. I was happy in my town without knowing it. I did a lot of things, and I never really thought about them or appreciated them. Then when I was12, my dad decided to bring me to the United States. The news made me happy and sad at the same time. I was happy, because I would see and learn about more places and people. I was sad, because I was going to leave my family, my friends and my dog. First I took the bus from Queretaro to the border of Laredo; my trip took me exactly 18 hours. At the bus stop in Houston, Texas I told my dad that I wanted some snacks. My dad took me into the store with him. When I went into the store I felt weird, because all the people who were there spoke English. Then my dad started speaking English with the store clerk. When we finally left the store, I told my dad, “Dad, I need to learn English, because it’s one of the most important things that I need in this country.” It was there in that store where I began to feel uncomfortable about not being able to speak the same language as everyone around me. Then my trip started again from Houston to Florida. It took me more than 26 hours.
