My life changed
By Eliana | From : Eritrea | School : International High School at Langley ParkMy story begins in Eritrea. When I was 4 years old. I was living with my mom and my sisters. I was about to leave my country.
I wasn’t feeling safe when I was in my country. My life was in danger at that time because there were a lot of problems going on in the government, also there was no freedom in my country. Even though these problems are serious, I didn’t want to leave my country because I didn’t want to leave my all friends behind.
My life changed when I was 11 years old. My mom sat down and she was like “I have news.” I was really wondering what it could be. I think that time I was 4 years old from what I remember. That time It was 8:00 PM when my mom tell us that she have news. When all sat down my mom said “We have to leave Eritrea.” We were so shocked. Even though we didn’t want to leave. But we had to.
I went to the refugee camp with my family. I lived as a refugee for 7 and a half years. I started school at Candy Gordon. It was kind of hard for me to make new friends because at that time I was a really bashful person.
In 2019 I left the refugee camp after 7 years. It was hard for me to leave my friends in a refugee camp. When I was leaving I was really crying because it is hard to lose your friends. I was worried about how I would make new friends.
In 2019 I came to the United States with my mom and sisters. When I was on the airplane I felt scared, because that was my first time taking an airplane, but it was also kind of fun to fly for the first time ever In my life. When I was on the airplane I couldn’t sleep well because the airplane had lots of people. There was not enough space for me to sleep.
Things start to change when I came to The United States. I didn’t know how to speak English. It was hard for me to make new friends because I didn’t know English. When I first came to the U.S. I started school in 6th grade. On my first day of school I was so scared because I was thinking that they were going to ask me something in English. At that time I didn’t know Google Translate existed. I was also afraid that the teacher was gonna say something in English that I couldn’t understand. I was worried about how to answer the questions in English.
At the end of my story now I think about all that happened. I say to myself that it is good that I came to the United States because, In the United States, there are a lot of rights. Now I learned how to speak English. I’m In 9th grade now. It has been almost 4 years since I have been in the United States. One day I will tell myself that everything changes when you go Forward in your life.
