I did not know anybody to understand my dreams.
By Antonio | From : Guatemala | School : Lake Worth High SchoolMy name is Antonio, and I am 17 years old. I moved from Guatemala to the United States in 2017. My life wasn’t that good in Guatemala. My father died when I was 6 years old. He used to buy me clothes and supported me, but after he died everything turned out difficult. I didn’t have anybody to support me, so I had to move to the United States. I left everything behind and sadly immigrated here to meet with my aunt, to study and to have a better life.
The first weeks in the United States, everything was easier than in my country. My aunt had to take care of me and to buy my clothes. I feel better here because after my father’s death it was difficult. Sometimes I get sad and cry about him. It is sad that the future in Guatemala is not clear. Sometimes people without opportunities don’t know what to do to have a better life. Nevertheless, I think about the great memories of my country. When I close my eyes, I hear my mother’s sweet voice, and I see us gathering and eating together as a family. These are the things that go through my mind.
It is very nice and beautiful in the United States. I like it because, unlike my country, I am in school studying. Here, school is free, and I am able to study. In my country, school is not free and you have to pay to get an education. I’ve been in school for 3 months. My first week at school was difficult because I did not understand English, but using the computer was easy and I had no problems with it. My happiest moment here is being able to study. I’m happy and glad I am here studying English and computers. Education is very important to me in order to have a better life with my family. I haven’t had a sad moment in America. I want people to know that here I have the opportunity to meet new people with the same goals as me which is to learn English and learn new things, opportunities we didn’t have in our countries. I am meeting good people and talking about the same goals, and this has helped me see the importance of doing something for my future. Before coming to this country, I did not know anybody to share my aspirations with or to understand my dreams.
