The story of how i learned Spanish

By Julian  |   From : Puerto Rico  |   School : Lehigh Senior High School

My story today was written when I was younger and took place between my second year of elementary school and my 5th year so it was a long time but most of the story will be in my time in school. So I’ll start from when I first moved to Puerto Rico with my family. It seemed like a fun thing to me because I was little and always thought that it would be fun for a vacation trip. This is what I thought until my parents told me we were going to live there from now on and it kind of scared me cause I didn’t know Spanish and I would have to go to a new school and make new friends so I was nervous at first but then I got used to it then in like 3rd grade and that’s when my school had to shut down and it was a bilingual school.

So it was easy cause most people spoke English but then I started going to a Spanish school and it was ruff at the start but then I started to learn enough Spanish to get by then I met some people who helped me a lot while I went to school cause they spoke English so they would help translate things for me. But around 4th grade, things started to be good I knew a good amount of Spanish had friends, and had good grades it was fun and I enjoyed Puerto Rico but then hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico, and that made it hard cause school was out and there was no power or water so it was hard so my parents decided to move back to Florida and then I came back and started 5th grade and I didn’t know that I was behind on what they were learning and didn’t know how to read very well so it was a struggle at first but then I was caught up on what we were learning and started to get better at reading and to learn my nouns and adjectives and all those things I never learned.

This was one of the things I hated about moving back was that I was always behind in class but then when I started middle school when I decided to focus on my grades and being better than my peers this led to me having really good grades but then feeling very burned out and not making many friends the only friends I had were the ones I had in elementary that ended up going to the same school as me so I was very quiet and not social in middle school so I felt lonely again but I ended up meeting some new people who wouldn’t leave me alone cause in their words “You look sad we’re friends now and if you don’t agree too bad I’m not leaving you alone”. That’s how I met my best friend. Now he still doesn’t leave me alone to this day so I guess we were telling the truth. But this was where I started to become very social and make a lot more friends. Then I started high school and just started to enjoy school and the time I had with my friends. All of these events are what made me who I am and I’m glad these things happened to me though some negative and others positive it’s made me the person I am and how I see the world now so it might have been hard but it was just an obstacle I had to overcome to be better. This is a story that I feel many can relate to because they might have gone through or are going through this and it’s nice to know that there are others who have gone through the same thing.

This was how my school life and it showed me that many people go through problems and don’t say anything about it so it leads to them not getting help.I would like to help people understand that there are people who can and will help them learn and will be of great help to them but most kids nowadays don’t want the help because it makes them feel bad about themselves and then they give up on school which is sad cause many people could have a bright future but they give it up cause they felt left out.
