Time to time
By Deiry | From : Cuba | School : Mariner High SchoolMigration is the displacement of a population or families that occurs from one place to another for different reasons, whether personal or governmental, which entails an emotional change in each person, both positively and negatively. Most talk about the journey, l come here though a journey, but very few comment on the challenges of each teenager upon arriving here and having to face something totally different that is not even close to what each child imagines when they hear: “United States,” a country that i thought all was so easy like work and travel and go to party.
It is precisely those first months when we lose the image that in the United States everything is easy and the first day of school arrives where we don’t know anyone. It was quite a difficult and tough challenge to face a huge high school without knowing the language perfectly. But every day I told myself that I could do it like many others and that nothing was impossible but just a little complicated.
As time went by, little by little I saw the change and I realized that it was not the same as at the beginning, because I did not understand anyone, not even the teachers and I could not make friends either because almost everyone speaks English and we all come from the Spanish language. Little by little I realized that I understood the teachers and I already knew how to do the tasks they assigned. I felt a great relief because my grades were improving and that is what every good student wants but everything has its time and with dedication we can achieve it. I remember paying attention to my teachers when they were explaining and I always asked when I wanted to know something .
I was always aware that there were thousands of students like me and I tried to help them because at some point I went through the same thing since I saw students like me from my country and the same language.
I always thought that my parents had come to improve their lives but mainly so that I could have a better life with a future assured to focus on studies since it is a country with many opportunities that my country doesn’t have because it is a corrupt country where it’s impossible to study something because it doesn’t have books. So here , in this country each person decides which part to take, whether good or bad.
I decided to choose the good part because my parents always inspired me .
I try to communicate my story to all those people or students who at a certain moment come to think that they cannot achieve what they have never done and even fall into depression, “we have to trust the process.”
