Sorry

I want to be someone in life

By Cristian  |   From : Guatemala  |   School : Lake Worth High School

I am Christian  from Guatemala.  In 2017, I moved to the United States to go ahead in life and to innovate as a person.  I came here alone with a lot of effort. I’ve been here for 5 months. I still remember my country; I remember my mother, my friends and my country’s food.  My happiest memory was being with my family and my friends. The saddest moment in my country was when my youngest brother died. It was the saddest moment of our lives.

The first weeks in the USA, I felt very happy because finally my American dream was fulfilled.  I remember my teachers speaking English to me and not knowing what they were talking about. It is not easy to learn a new language.  Schools should help new students by focusing more on teaching English and not on other subjects because if we don’t know English, we are not going to understand anything.

My goal in this country is to be educated. I want to be someone in life and not be illiterate.  I want to have the opportunity my family did not have; they only went to school until fifth grade.   I want to be someone in life. When I heard about the opportunity to come here, I took it because I wanted to learn things that I could have never learned in my country.  I was afraid that people would discriminate against me for being an immigrant. Here in America, I see things differently from my country: the houses, the language. Around me there are my two brothers; I am happy to have the opportunity to see them and be with them.  Thanks to God, I have no sad memories.

Here, I have learned to respect the rules.  I have learned that if we know a little, it does not mean that we are superior than others because we are all the same. I want people to help more people like me, those who go through the same things like me.
