A proud moment in my life
By Stecha | From : Haiti | School : Plantation High SchoolI am 14 years old and was born in Haiti, the first Black independent nation in the world, but a country that has now become very dangerous. I stayed in my country for 13 years until my father found a way for me and my family to travel to America because of the situation in Haiti. It was not easy to leave all my friends and my aunt, whom I loved very much. Before I came to America I experienced a terrible accident with my father. One day, after finishing school, he came to pick me up, and we drove home together. Suddenly, while driving through the streets, he failed to notice a car speeding toward us from the opposite direction. In an instant, the other vehicle collided with ours.
The impact was devastating, and I immediately felt a jolt of pain as I was thrown against my seatbelt. My father, who had been wearing his seatbelt, suffered a significant blow to his neck and head, leaving him momentarily dazed. The sound of shattering glass and mangled metal filled the air, and I could see the extent of the damage to our car. Fortunately, we both survived, but the accident left us shaken and with injuries that would require careful attention and recovery. It was a tragic experience that changed our perspective on the importance of safety on the road.
At the end of the year 2023 my uncle applied for us to come to America before things got worse in Haiti. When I got off the airplane, we had to stand in the immigration line from 6:00pm-2:00am. I was really tired and hungry. On the way to my uncle’s house I was excited to see all the big buildings and lights. I was surprised to see all the other people on the street at that time and when I arrived at my uncle’s house, I was hungry, and I saw that they had left food on the table for me and my family. It was not food from my country, and it was the first time I ate American food – chicken wings. And I loved it!
A proud moment in my life occurred on the last Sunday of May, which is when Mother’s Day is celebrated in Haiti. I had been saving money for this special occasion, and my father also contributed some money to my surprise. With these funds, I decided to buy a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a lovely Victoria’s Secret perfume kit that I knew my mother would adore.
While I was busy preparing the surprise, I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation. I wanted to make this day unforgettable for her, as she had always been there for me in every moment of my life. I remember how I carefully selected the flowers, ensuring they were vibrant and fragrant, just like her. As I made my way back home, I could hardly contain my enthusiasm, imagining the smile on her face when she received the gifts.
When I finally presented the flowers and the perfume to her, her eyes lit up with joy. She hugged me tightly, and I could feel her gratitude radiating warmth. We spent the rest of the day together, reminiscing about beautiful memories and enjoying each other’s company. That Mother’s Day was not just about the gifts; it was about celebrating our special bond and expressing my love and appreciation for all she has done for me.
